Summary of the chapter 'Two gentlemen of Verona'

                                              Summary

'Two Gentlemen of Verona' is a touching story of two brothers Jacopo and Nicola, aged 12 and 13, who do odd jobs and live a hard life to sustain themselves and to treat their elder sister who is suffering from tuberculosis of the spine.

The story is set in Verona. The writer and his friend were driving through the Alps when they met the two boys. The two boys Nicola and Jacopo were selling wild strawberries from them, but the author was somehow impressed by the demeanor of the two boys. So, he saw them shining shoes in the public square. This amazed the narrator. The two boys proudly told the author that they do numerous odd jobs to earn money. One midnight the author saw them resting on the stone of a footpath. Nicola sat tired with a bundle of unsold newspapers while his brother Jacopo was sleeping by putting his head on Nicola's shoulder. The narrator asked the boys if they saved money to immigrate to America. The two boys denied this and said that they had some other plants. The author found the two boys very friendly and innocent. Beneath their smiling faces, the author was able to notice the sadness that defied their age. The author was impressed by their zest to work. But the author was still unhappy to see that they wore torn clothes and hardly ate anything. The two boys did all odd jobs for the author during his story.

When the author's trip was coming to an end, he asked the two boys if they needed any help from him. To this, Jacopo asked if the author could drop them to the nearby village, Poleta, which was 30 km away. The next day, as a last gesture of goodwill, he said that he would definitely drive them. The next afternoon, the author drove them to a nearby village. The author was surprised to stop beside a huge villa. Before he could question, the boys leapt out and asked the author to pick them up from he same place, after an hour. The author refused to go inside because he didn't want to interrupt a happy family reunion. On being asked, the nurse told the author that the children's father had been killed in a war, and a bomb had destroyed their sister had to undergo a lot of suffering. The author came out quietly from the Villa. He was touched by their selfless action, nobility and devotion. He was filled with admiration, love and respect for the two boys who remained determined and strong to their purpose.

                                                             Outcome

The author was always intrigued why the two boys worked so hard. He got his answer when he went to drop them to the village. The nurse told them about the illness of their sister. The narrator then developed a special respect for them. He realised that the magnanimity of heart and nobleness of purpose actually make on a true gentlemen.
